IN THE NEWS: Navy, businesses, academia seek collaboration site on Aquidneck Island

The champions of 401 Tech Bridge — a materials innovation center that pulls from the private sector, academia and the Navy — says it has the potential to expand the economy, and there’s a plan to ground the new initiative in a physical space on Aquidneck Island.

Last year, Gov. Gina Raimondo and David Dooley, president of the University of Rhode Island, announced the first round of innovation grants, funded by a $20-million bond in 2016. The bond calls for hubs created by academia and industry, and these hubs would use academic research to fuel economic growth. The 401 Tech Bridge is considered one of those hubs.
